Plot & Premise
Bhool Chuk Maaf, written and directed by Karan Sharma, is a fantasy-romantic comedy that centers on a small-town couple in Banaras. Rajkummar Rao plays Raj, a pragmatic young man who lands a government job to fulfill a childhood promise to his fiancée Titli (Wamiqa Gabbi). On the eve of their wedding, a mystical time loop traps Raj in an endless cycle of the same day, forcing him to confront his deepest fears, forgotten vows, and the very nature of commitment
Performances
Rajkummar Rao brings his trademark earnestness to the role of Raj. He navigates levity and pathos as the loop’s repetition peels back his character’s layers—sometimes with crisp comic timing, occasionally with forced solemnity.

Wamiqa Gabbi as Titli sparkles in the lighter scenes, though her potential is undercut when the screenplay relegates her to reaction shots rather than fully participating in the loop’s mechanics.
Seema Pahwa and Sanjay Mishra provide solid support: Pahwa as Raj’s well-meaning aunt offers earthy humor, while Mishra’s cameo as a befuddled priest adds a welcome dash of unpredictability
Direction & Writing
Karan Sharma’s concept—a time-loop premise in a traditional “shaadi” backdrop—had genuine promise. However, the screenplay often sacrifices logic for whimsy. Scenes that should feel urgent instead feel repetitive, and key revelations arrive abruptly. The film’s pacing sags midway: plot mechanics (Why is Raj trapped? How can he escape?) remain under-explored until the final act.
Technical Aspects
Cinematography (Sudeep Chatterjee): Varanasi’s ghats and narrow lanes are captured beautifully, but the repetitive loop means many compositions reoccur, diluting their visual impact
Editing (Manish Pradhan): While intended to emphasize the loop’s cyclical nature, the editing sometimes feels heavy-handed—beating jokes to death rather than letting them breathe.
Music & Score: Ketan Sodha’s background score underlines key emotional beats, but none of the songs (including Tanishk Bagchi’s recreated “Koi Na”) leave a lasting impression.

Audience & Critical Response
Netizens on X (formerly Twitter) hailed the film as a “heartwarming feel-good” story and praised its leads’ chemistry—especially in lighthearted moments
Indian Express likened Bhool Chuk Maaf to a “poor man’s Brahmastra,” noting that despite its enchanting setting, it “looks and feels” derivative of bigger-budget fantasies
NDTV was more critical, awarding 2 stars, and argued that the film “goes completely overboard with its premise without creating a logical context” for its fantastical events
Verdict
Bhool Chuk Maaf succeeds when it leans into its romantic core—two spirited leads falling in love against the backdrop of timeless Varanasi. Its time-loop gimmick, however, overstays its welcome, leaving the viewer wondering when the next reset will finally free them. Fans of Rajkumar Rao’s charm and a lighthearted love story may find enjoyment, but those seeking coherent fantasy logic or truly memorable music will likely walk away wanting more.
